Features that carried over to the new version are the tried and tested mid-sized blade and ergonomic handle along with a front-finger choil and spine cusp. Also staying is the blade-to-handle geometry and leveraging points which make the Dragonfly cut and feel like a much larger large knife when in the hand.
New refinements include: the addition of a left/right tip-up wire clip, patented Bi-Directional Texturing’ on the handle, choil and spine jimping and screw together handle construction. The blade is still premium VG-10, now in a high-performance flat-grind with a plain or serrated edge.
The position of the enlarged Spyderco Round Opening Hole in relation to the pivot leads to smooth opening and the FRN (fiberglass reinforce nylon) handle fits the hand ergonomically with a series of grip angles and leveraging spots.

Going back to that initial breakaway moment from 1981, Spyderco's main point of difference at that time, and still today, was down to a few key ergonomic innovations that made their knives much more user-friendly for their customers. The first of these innovations is the use of the Spyderco Round Hole. This simple but immensely effective ergonomic innovation changed the game for folding knives. It came at a time when single-handed folding knives didn't open anywhere near as easily as they did once the Round Hole was introduced. It allowed the user to pinch the knife blade between the thumb and forefinger, close to the spine, and lever the blade out. The next innovation was another simple but highly effective addition to what was already a solid blade. This was the pocket clip. Though simple as an idea, this was a huge step forward for everyday carriers and provided the user with stability and security in their pocket, while ensuring other items held in the pocket could still be easily accessed.ÂHow To Clean A Spyderco Knife
After using your Spyderco knife for a cutting task, you may find that it is in need of a clean. The extent to which the knife needs cleaning and what materials you use will depend mainly on what the knife was cutting. For a general mess that hasn't left grease, a simple wipe-down with a rag or towel will suffice. If the knife has been used for cutting up meat or another task leaving behind greasy material, a combination of dish soap and warm water is your best bet. If after using the knife for a period of time and you can see that it is starting to accumulate dust, grim, pocket lint and other residues, you may choose to pull the knife apart and do a thorough clean. Do this by:- Unscrewing the knife and placing any screws and parts on a tray to keep them together.
- Place the knife parts in a bucket with warm soapy water.
- Use a toothbrush or other bristled utensil to scrub everything clean.
- Rinse everything and allow to dry prior to reassembly.
- Put the knife back together, ensuring all screws are done up tight.
