Some of the most popular types of tactical knives include:

– Folding knives: Folding knives are easy to carry and can be concealed when not in use. They are ideal for self-defence and can be used as a last resort weapon.

– Fixed blade knives: Fixed blade knives are stronger and more durable than folding knives, making them ideal for hunting and camping. They can also be used for self-defence, but are more difficult to conceal.

– Multi-tools: Multi-tools combine a knife with other useful tools, such as pliers or a screwdriver. They are versatile and can be used for a wide range of tasks, making them ideal for survival situations.

Tactical knives are often associated with military applications and as such, they’ve become synonymous with the same level of quality and craftsmanship that would be demanded from those in the armed forces.

Features of a good tactical knife

The term tactical knife has been getting broader for some time, and the features and specifications that qualify a knife to be given this title are wide-ranging. But there are certain aspects of a knife’s design that will land it in the tactical category.

Let’s start by looking at the grip area of the knife. One obvious giveaway is if the knife is fitted with an ergonomic grip with a clear emphasis on aiding comfort and grip in the hand, as well as providing a more secure hold. This usually manifests itself in finger grooves or contouring on the handle, and sometimes even in the inclusion of textured panels.

The blade is another area where we see tactical knives differentiated from their EDC (Everyday Carry) counterparts. A tactical knife will generally have a longer blade, often with a serrated edge for added utility. The shape of the blade will also be designed with specific tasks in mind – such as a tanto point for puncturing tough materials – and this will affect how effective the knife is at performing certain tasks.

When it comes to opening the blade, most tactical knives will either employ a thumb stud or a hole near the handle to allow for a quick and fluid opening action. Additionally, many tactical knives are fitted with a guard above the handle to protect the holder’s hand during use.

Finally, a feature that may be seen in some tactical knives is the inclusion of a slightly pointed metal tip at the butt of the knife.

How do I care for my tactical knife?

Sharpening and cleaning your tactical knife is essential for ensuring that it retains its sharpness and function. Here are some tips on how to do it:

Honing the knife

There are a couple of ways to go about this. The first method is called honing. Honing is the use of a sharpening rod that the knife is then drawn down the length of the sharpening rod. Do this by placing the base of the knife’s blade at the top of the sharpening rod and then drag the knife downwards while pulling it towards you.

Honing is able to be done on a very regular basis and is a quick and helpful method of correcting imperfections in the blade’s edge. This is different to sharpening the blade, which involves removing a small layer of the cutting edge and should be done less regularly than honing.
